Lejar’s
plantar sponge and the calf muscular pump
There are various mechanisms for an adequate
return: vis a tergo, vis a fronte, valve system,
venous tone, pulsations of the neighbouring
joints, calf muscular pump or Lejar’s
plantar sponge.
Lejar’s plantar sponge is a dense venous
network which plays an important role in the
venous drainage of the foot. We walk on this
sponge which is flattened with every step
and, because of a simple pressure effect,
the deep veins in the foot are emptied.

In turn, the bending and stretching movements
of the calf muscles act as a pressure pump,
easing the venous return and avoiding the
retention of blood in the calf.
A direct influence on the plantar sponge and
on the muscular pump of the calf by means
of passive exercise in which we make constant
bending-stretching movements will stimulate
the venous return and will prevent the development
of a chronic venous insufficiency. |
